Stan’s Cafe

Writing For and With Devising
Friday 25th May, 10am-1pm
Foyle Studio, £10

James Yarker, Artistic Director of Stan’s Cafe, leads a practical workshop focusing on approaches to writing for theatre within a devising context. With over twenty years experience as writer working within a devising company, James is well placed to lead an exploration into the wide range of roles a writer can take when a play is being devised.

Real life experiences will illuminate areas including: writing as inspiration; writing to order; working with actors and documentary material; writing for and from improvisation; aligning form with content. Finally the limits of devising will be discussed in relation The Just Price of Flowers a show that resisted being devised and had to be written.

Throughout the workshop, discussion and insight will be complimented with practical challenges and writing exercises drawn from the processes and techniques used in the creation of successful shows including Good and True, Home of the Wiggler, Be Proud Of Me, Lurid and Insane and Voodoo City.

There will also be the opportunity for you to ask questions and address concerns as they apply directly to you. Bring a pen (and any fancy electronic device you fancy).

The Just Price of Flowers is being restaged in co-Production with Birmingham Repertory Theatre @AE Harris June 15th – 30th.
